Focus on Health

Filling out a lengthy form to apply for new health insurance? is an eye-opening experience. I did this today and I am glad that the process is over. There were over 90 diseases to choose from, all of which had a little box next to it to check yes or no. I thought to myself, why do they call it health insurance? Where is the health I felt like I was playing Where’s Waldo. Was there some little blue patch of health amidst this array of illnesses?

Since I hit a really big birthday this week, I am especially happy and grateful that I did not have one single box to check. I even remarked to myself that of all these diseases, nary a one had crossed my path. I was so curious what the incidence was for the average person completing such a form. Maybe there are others who are blessed with great health as I am. I hope so. In fact, I would like to meet that person and compare notes about our respective strategies, beliefs, and best practices.

As a health coach, I have often preached about the difference between focusing on our health, versus managing disease. A delicate line is drawn between being well and merely avoiding getting sick.

If I were the owner of a Health Insurance company, or if I was responsible for creating the intake form, I think that there are some excellent questions that would have been just as telling to determine someone’s eligibility for insurance. Or perhaps more so!

Here are the questions I would have asked.

  1. What do you do on a consistent basis to make your health a priority
  2. Do you have a robust immune system? If yes, please elaborate.
  3. What do you do to ensure you maintain a healthy weight
  4. Describe your exercise program.
  5. What do you do to promote relaxation and to release stress
  6. Do you make time for the loving relationships in your life? Please elaborate.
  7. Do you have work-life balance? Please describe.
  8. Describe what you had for your last three meals.

Each of those questions is connected to creating health on purpose. This, my friend, is health insurance in its very best form. They should call that other thing by a different name so we know when we are really insuring that we stay well.

With love and encouragement,
