I am a health coach. In order to be effective, I tell my clients what they need to know, not what they want to hear. Since I am not trying to win a popularity contest, I figure that they will love me more if I lead them to achieve their goals rather than if I was nicey-nice in hopes that they will like me. Don’t get me wrong, I am very nice to my clients. It’s just that when necessary, I’m willing to serve up a generous portion of tough love in order to get the job done.
Now I am being coached by a marketing expert. Her name is Teresa Miller of Agile T Marketing. Let me tell you, it is an interesting process. Being Teresa’s client is going to do more for me than execute on my marketing plan. It is going to help me be a better coach. I am able to see how coaching works from the inside-out. My clients will benefit from the insights I am gaining, which I will describe below. Consider this a user’s guide to getting the most from your coach.
Teresa has asked me to do things that are extremely uncomfortable for me. I joked when I told her that I hated that she asked me to redo my entire Health Coaching document, but that I didn’t hate her.
Does your coach lead you outside of your comfort zone because she or he is helping you get your goals met
By redoing this document as Teresa requested, I learned some invaluable things about marketing, plus how to use tools that make a huge difference. For example, colors matter. (Who knew ) There is a nifty app that helps me identify colors in order to reproduce them. When Teresa first suggested that I use this tool, my resistance was sky high, until I followed her directions and then loved the results. If we compare this to your coach encouraging you to drink more water and ditch the diet soda, as an example, if this has been your habit, you might hate this suggestion. But when you experience the relief and energy that come from doing this, you are then further ahead in completing the very goals you asked your coach to help you achieve.
Sometimes I feel that Teresa is asking too much of me. I feel like packing it in, not believing that this is going to work. Often an overwhelming feeling washes over me. Then, reluctantly, I dig in, actually test the microphone for upcoming podcasts and have to admit that it was kind of fun. Miraculously, every time I do what she asks of me, I see that the results we are working toward come into focus.
Let’s say that against your wishes (because, let’s face it, we all want to wrap ourselves in that proverbial comfort zone blanket) your health coach asks you to go to bed at the same time every night and forgo snacking once dinner is over. You might want to scream, No way! But then, what if you just try it
What if you surrender to the person whose job it is to help you get what you want
If your experience is like mine, you will be so dang happy with how you feel, that you will be inspired to continue with the process. And the results you crave (loving how you feel, loving how you look, experiencing more balance in your life) begin to come into focus for you.
As a result of Teresa’s relentless support and guidance, I feel stronger and more confident. This thing called ‘marketing’ which was always intimidating and out-of-focus for me is now within my grasp. My dream of helping people transform their health, their bodies, and their lives at a much higher level is coming true.
If you have the chance to work with a health coach, don’t worry about liking what she tells you to do. Just do it. Then you’ll love yourself, the results, and who you become along the way. If Teresa didn’t nudge me to grow and stretch myself, I would not be able to achieve my dreams. If a health coach nudges you to grow and stretch yourself, to do things that bring up tremendous resistance, remember that the two of you are a team and she is doing her job. You don’t have to thank your coach. Thank yourself, and your coach will get the best reward, which is watching you succeed.
